Performing arts complex (PAC)

Construction in 2013 - completion by semester 2, 2014.

Albany Creek State High School currently enrols 1050 students across years 8-12. With the introduction of year 7 into secondary schools for 2015, coupled with sustained enrolment growth, the school predicts enrolments as high as 1350 in future years.

In 2010, the theatre proposal was tabled at a Queensland parliament community cabinet meeting for consideration and support. Funding was provided in the 2011/12 budget for a full design brief and engineering report for the Albany Creek State High School performing arts centre. The building and construction of this centre will be completed in 2014 and is partially funded for the 2015 introduction of year 7’s into high school. The curriculum areas which will utilise this complex include dance, drama, music and multimedia with the additional provision of appropriate learning spaces for English and SOSE. An arts excellence program will provide unique arts learning opportunities for students to develop and enhance creative and artistic production and performance skills and provide opportunities for students to excel in one or more of the arts. This facility will also host student assemblies, awards presentations and similar school events.

This facility will be a professional theatre space to support excellence in curriculum programs across the school and the school’s vision of ‘building a world class learning organisation’ and to improve student’s performance outcomes and facilitate partnerships with a range of community stakeholders and universities.

Technical specifications

The performing arts centre is architecturally designed by mode design and will be built at the front of the school on the corner of old northern road and Albany forest drive, Albany Creek. This site will provide public visibility and street access for all community groups and will allow easy access for students to use as a timetabled facility during the day. The ‘new’ multimedia and performance centre will be a 500 seat tiered theatre venue with an elevated and permanent stage for assembly, school events and public performances. The theatre will also have four dance and drama spaces, a multi-purpose rehearsal area, a multimedia classroom with editing suite and a green room for video editing. In the adjacent music building there will be two classrooms, three sound-proof instrumental music practice rooms, an outdoor performance area and a staffroom. The entrance foyer includes a box office and will provide a gallery and display space with hanging capabilities for school and community art exhibitions. The sound and lighting system will have state of the art multimedia capabilities and a control room and multiple stage lighting bars, projectors and stage screens. Parking facility will be developed adjacent to the theatre near the administration blocks current parking facility. The performing arts complex will provide a facility for our community and a showcase for student excellences.
